RT001 (Botulinum Toxin Type A) Topical Gel for the Treatment of Hyperhidrosis

RT001, a topically applied botulinum toxin type A, is under investigation for the treatment of hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating. RT001 is an investigational product in clinical stage development under an IND filed with the US FDA and Clinical Trial Application in Canada.

Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) affects up to 3% of the world’s population – 8 million people in the US alone.1 In many cases, consumers with hyperhidrosis have been suffering since adolescence or early adulthood. Their condition causes them great discomfort, emotional distress, and severely limits their social activity.

Treatment of hyperhidrosis remains an unmet need as current treatments lack adequate efficacy, are invasive, or have tedious treatment regimens and side effects. Although it is one of the most efficacious treatments, treatment with injectable botulinum toxin requires up to 40 injections to treat the underarms and up to 120 injections for the hands or feet. As these areas are quite sensitive, anesthetic block is often used to ease the patient’s discomfort during treatment. Injections in the palms and soles are also prone to complications since the underlying muscle function of the hands and feet must be maintained.

RT001 Topical Gel has the potential to offer sufferers of hyperhidrosis a topically applied treatment that may be safe, effective and less painful than the current injectable options.

In a Phase 1/2 study, topically applied botulinum toxin (RT001) appears to be as safe and well tolerated for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis.1
