Technology
Revance’s technology is based on our proprietary macromolecular transport systems (MTS) and dermal remodeling compounds that are safe, targeted, and focal to the site of treatment. The company has focused its development on new proprietary compounds and transport systems for known or currently approved molecules. Strategically, the company’s product pipeline is based on developing best in class and/or first to market products.
The market for botulinum toxin type A for cosmetic applications is large and growing. Botulinum toxin injections are the single largest cosmetic procedure performed in the US, with over 3.2 MM injections in 2005, a growth of 16% versus previous year (ASAPS data). Revance is developing a topical botulinum toxin to offer an alternative to the injectable form of the drug. Potential Benefits
More than 7.5 million patients in the United States suffer from hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating. The current injectable botulinum toxin treatment requires up to 20 injections to treat each underarm and up to 60 injections to treat each hand or foot. As the hands and feet are extremely sensitive to injections, anesthetic block is required for treatment. Injections in the hands and feet are also prone to complications if there is loss of underlying muscle function. While most commonly known for its use in aesthetic applications, botulinum toxin used for therapeutic indications actually accounts for a large percentage of sales. The objective of the RT-001-HH program is to expand the therapeutic usage of botulinum toxin by diminishing or eliminating the clinical drawbacks associated with injections. Potential Benefits
In 2002, Revance developed a first in class proprietary technology that has been shown to augment elastin production and improve skin elasticity. Revance was also the first company to show clinical proof and commercialize products in this category. Elastin is a protein present in the extracellular matrix and is especially abundant in soft tissues that undergo repeated dimensional change, i.e. lungs, blood vessels and skin. The majority of elastin production is limited to a narrow window which peaks in early childhood, declines rapidly, and is nearly repressed by maturity. RTC-101 is the first available technology that has been clinically proven to augment elastin. In the area of elastin augmentation and dermal remodeling, Revance has developed cosmeceutical compounds that contribute to the restoration of elastin production in the skin. The loss of elastin is not currently addressed by current prescription or cosmeceutical products. Revance has commercialized the RTC-101 technology as a cosmeceutical product line under the brand name RELASTIN™. The products are currently available for sale in two formulations: Eye Silk (for the under eye area) and Skin Revitalizer (for the face). They are designed to improve the appearance and contour of skin, and reduce fine lines and wrinkles by increasing skin and soft tissue elasticity. More information on Relastin can be found on www.relastin.com.
