RT001 - Topical Botulinum Toxin Type A for the Treatment of Hyperhidrosis

large man wearing a suit and holding a basketballRT001, a topical botulinum toxin type A, is also under investigation for the treatment of hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating. RT001 is an investigational product in clinical stage development under an IND filed with the US FDA and Clinical Trial Application in Canada.

In a Phase 1/2 study, topically applied botulinum toxin (RT001) appears to be as safe and well tolerated for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis1.

Increasing the Tolerability of Treatment

According to the International Hyperhidrosis Society, up to 3% of the world's population suffers from this embarrassing condition - 7.5 million people in the US alone2. Excessive sweating that occurs primarily in the palms, soles or underarms is referred to as focal hyperhidrosis. In many cases, consumers with hyperhidrosis have been suffering since adolescence or early adulthood. Their condition causes them great discomfort and severely limits their social activity.

The current injectable botulinum toxin treatment requires up to 40 injections to treat the underarms and up to 120 injections to treat the hands or feet. As these areas are quite sensitive, anesthetic block is often used to ease the patient's discomfort during treatment of the hands and feet.

Injections in the palms and soles are also prone to complications since the underlying muscle function of the hands and feet must be maintained.

The objective of the Revance program is to alleviate the pain and discomfort of people with hyperhidrosis by offering a treatment that may be safe, effective and less painful than the current injectable options.
